These emigrants were selected from among applicants on Colonel George Wyndham’s Irish estates. They sailed from Ireland to Quebec on the Waterloo, superintended by Charles Rubidge, a half-pay naval officer who had settled in the Newcastle District. Rubidge accompanied the immigrants to Cobourg, helped them to find a first job in the area, and paid occasional attention to them thereafter. He drew up this list in January 1840 and sent it to Anthony Hawke, the chief emigrant agent for Upper Canada, to quell rumours that the immigrants had all decamped for the United States.

This emigration was the first Wyndham sponsored from Ireland and the only one conducted on lines similar to the Petworth emigrations under his father, the third Earl of Egremont. It was supervised by Thomas Sockett and James Marr Brydone, who acted as chairman of the Ennis Emigration Committee. In later years, Wyndham sponsored roughly as many emigrants from Ireland as his father had from England. After 1839, however, he sent his emigrants under the same spare system as other Irish landlords with none of the special care taken in 1839.
